  1. Journal Excerpt:
I also suddenly realized the numerous opportunities I have every day to do something to make the community a better place. Many of these opportunities are missed. I could have been volunteering more at home at the local pound, or even at my old elementary school.

I believe it is important to give back as much as you can, not just as much as is comfortable (which is what I had been doing before). I want to volunteer more, and I'm glad that we will be doing community service in this class :)

  2. I think that an important part of being an engaged citizen is learning from your mistakes and the mistakes of others to improve your community. To be an engaged citizen does not necessarily mean you must be completely active in all aspects of the community, it just means that you have to be aware of how your actions are affecting others by being respectful and responsible.

I was inspired to write this by the New York Times article, about multitasking while driving, because of the death of a 15 year old girl in my hometown. She was hit by a car while crossing the street and it is rumored that both the driver and the girl were texting. After this incident i was more concious about not multitasking while I drive.

  4. Journal excerpt:
"Yeah sure it was kind of annoying that she kept repeating it over and over, but it made me realize that how you handle situations that may not be ideal kind of shape how you will be when you become a citizen of the real world. I feel like a lot of the time people aren’t tolerant enough with other people and just get angry without seeing the deeper meaning behind it."

This journal was inspired by a conversation that I had with a friend and how I reacted to her complaining. It inspired me to think about how I treat others and try to come up with a better way to handle situations were people may not share my same viewpoints.

  5. b) Often the greatest heroes are not the most obvious. Teddy Kennedy’s brothers, all three, died for their nation. Teddy Kennedy never was elected to the white house. Teddy Kennedy got kicked out of Harvard. And yet he changed our nations. Individual citizens are just that individuals and while they/you/I may not be cast as the #1 guy we can still be the #1 guys.

    I read Teddy Kennedy's obituary

  6. "I was very timid at the beginning of this week, not knowing anyone, and now because of the extremely nice, outgoing people here I feel welcomed. Even if it is a simple wave from someone that I had met earlier, a smile from a dorm parent, a kiss from Jenny (the dog), or someone I haven’t met yet introducing themselves to me. It is those small acts of kindness that make nice citizens and a successful community."

  8. Excerpt: “The teacher was trying to hint at me to go and when I did, I just sang the first song that came to mind, ‘The Itsy Bitsy Spider’.”

During this line, when I was writing it, I was thinking how stupid I felt during the workshop. I don’t have a good singing voice so I couldn’t show any kind of singing talent when I sang that song. The “Itsy Bitsy Spider” song also had nothing to do with the previous song that was sung. The song that was sung right before me was “Sergeant Pepper” by the Beatles. I know that song, so I’m surprised I couldn’t make any connection. Also, even though I knew the song I think I thought she said “sergeant spider”. I don’t know why, but that’s the song that I heard! This isn’t a real song (as far as I know). I just wasn’t thinking clearly during that game because I was so nervous about the singing part, it was hard to concentrate on the other parts of the game. This drove me crazy and I think that it’s because the songs had no connection with the previous one. I guess I was also thinking about how much I want to be a part of the Theater Major community at Walnut Hill, but feel left out sometimes because I have so much difficulty singing. Singing the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” definitely did not make me feel more part of the community or feel like it helped others see me as part of the community!

  9. The article I read was "Clean Water Laws are Neglected,at a Cost in Suffering" by Charles Duhigg

    Journal Excerpt
Reading articles from the New York Times gives me an understanding about being a engaged citizen. I think that to be an engaged citizen you have to help out the community and volunteer to d certain things that makes people happy. I agree with Drew who said "I think that an important part of being an engaged citizen is learning from your mistakes and the mistakes of others to improve your community." I geuss being an engaged citizen you have to be respectful and caring to others. Also cooperating well with others.

  10. "I’ve come to the realization that I intentionally set myself up for failure. I realize that this seems like a pretty extreme conclusion, but shockingly enough, there’s a lot of truth to it. What I mean by this is a lot of times when I have “a task” that requires a lot of effort usually I don’t even bother trying because I’m scared that by trying I might fail. (How messed up is that?!) I think this stems from being afraid of not getting what I want, which I realize is very selfish."

As we grow up, it's really important to build a strong connection between yourself and the community because ultimately the goal is to find a happy medium and be an "engaged citizen." In order to do this though, I think it's extremely important to reflect not only what's going on around you, but also you personally. My time at Walnut Hill has been a time of extreme change and there is definitely a lot that is worth reflecting on.

  11. Excerpt: Because most of today’s water pollution has no scent or taste, many people who consume dangerous chemicals do not realize it, even after they become sick, researchers say.

In Korea, same thing happened quite recently. The article was titled "A city where everyone die from cancer," Nobody noticed exept for thinking that the town was cursed or something. Because the cancer death rate increased, people did research and the result was shocking that there were toxic wastes in the water. This article, and this exerpt is not only for this country but it is a global problem that as a citizen of an earth, everyone is every parts of the world should participate

  12. Excerpt from Journal:

Today was the 4th year, the 4th day, the 4 hours of sea-sickness.

I wanted to try to make a "joke" so to speak or an honorable gesture, or illusion to the phrase "11th month, llth day, llth hour" in speaking about my experience on the cruise today for the fourth year in a row. I didn't want to copy the History saying entirely however.

  13. Excerpt: "I don’t know if all goodbyes are like this, but it terrifies me to think they are. It is so final, so sure, and so severing. I wonder what it will be like come Christmas break, and I am faced with every face I’ve already left behind."

I think it was a very learning experience for me to say goodbye to all my friends and family. I naively anticipated the separation to be easy, and as such was not prepared to miss everything so much. I think it was a very important experience however, and matured me as a person. We all must at some time leave things behind, and must let things go as well. I think it is also important to keep your friends and family close no matter the miles, and to strive to not ignore the people that helped you through so many years of your past, even when you are experiencing a whole new life somewhere else.

  14. "Good citizenship allows you to be the best part of the community that you can be, and a peaceful community allows for a better life. Therefore, by being a good citizen, one is definitely 'raging against the dying of the light'.” (Maggie McGuire's Journal Entry #4)

The quote "Raging against the dying of the light" Is in reference to a poem that I am currently analyzing for english class, that inspired my journal entry. I've determined that the main purpose of the poem is Dylan Thomas' extreme need to convince us that we must live life in the best way possible because it is so short and sometimes we think it may last forever. By being good citizens, we make our country better, and then we make our lives better, etc.

  15. I read an article "A Somber Warning on Afghanistan."

Journal: "But I think no matter it is big or not, having my own dream and will to achieve it makes me engaged citizen."
In journal I mentioned one politician named Sir Sherard, who wishes a warless Afghanistan and Pakistan. I thought that he is an engaged citizen, not because he a well-known politician, but because he has his own dream and goals to achieve. Even though he might not be able to find the direct, best way, the fact that he work for the issue and tries to find a better way makes him a true engaged citizen.

  16. 2)
Mr. Lohia said two policemen and a female civilian were killed instantly, and seven wounded people were hospitalized.

These people are hurt for no reasons. These two policemen were brave I think and the female civilian does not deserve her death because this car bomb was not an accident and it was all planned.
