1. The article I read was called, "An N.B.A. Giant and How He Grew" by Dwight Garner. It was article about the new book coming out called "Shooting Stars" which is a memoir about the life of Lebron James, one of the greatest basketball players of time. The article summarizes the book and discusses the fact that the book focuses on James' early life, and his high school basketball career. The book is aimed toward a young audience and has the aim of revealing what it was like for James as a young black basketball player.
2. The conflict in the article is the fact that the book "Shooting Stars" may be too modest and not realistic enough. It is written in a "hallmark" kind of way, and may not be completely true to the life of Labron James. It doesn't talk about the fact that he skipped college, it doesn't discuss the tattoo that James has, or his professional career. It may not be the most precise and detailed piece of literature.
3. The author makes the assumption that despite the fact that the book may not be completely true and it may have a little "fluff", it is still an enjoyable book to read, with plenty of charm.
4. The author has an attitude with a hint of sarcasm within the summary that he gives of the book, emphasizing the modesty and "hallmark charm" in order for the reader of the article to understand that the book will be moving and uplifting, but isn't completely accurate.
The article I read was about Disney and how archives such as the giant book from Sleeping Beauty are being pulled out to be exhibited and salvaged. Disney is trying to move forward with the times and make a show of props that have been used in shows and movies throughout the years. This is different from the past because in the past things have been kept hidden or stored away somewhere, because Walt Disney believed in keeping the magic of Disney a secret.
2) I believe the conflict to be between the old Disney and the way the world is moving and Disney is not as valued or admired as much as it used to be as other companies have grown and produced more. It seems like an attempt to save Disney (sort of).
3) The author makes the assumption that these props and archives are important to the reader.
4) The attitude of the author seems to be confident that this is a good thing for Disney. It has the manager Becky Cline of the archives speaking about how this is a good thing with the project D23. I feel it is almost a sort of advertisement of sorts, backing up the credibility of Disney and boasting its archives.
1) The article I read was called “Pentagon Keeps Wary Watch as Troops Blog”, by James Dao. It was about troops overseas using social networking (i.e. twitter, facebook, myspace, blogging etc.). This is how many have been staying in touch with their friends and families, and some are using it to explain what their days are like. However, the article focuses on the fact that the pentagon wants to strengthen security and privacy on the troops computers.
2) The conflict in this article is how the Pentagon wants to use the social media versus how the troops would like to use it. The Pentagon is worried about the security of the internet and the social networking sites, they would also like to control the voice of the troops over the web. The troops argue that it gives them a way to interact with their colleagues easily and debate many issues with themselves and students.
3) The writer assumes that the reader understands the computer, internet and technology of the military. It seems that some troops have their own computers with their own way on to the internet, and others have computer that belong to the military and use their connection.
4) The author stays fairly neutral throughout the article up until the last line. It is a quote from a soldier who had a blog. He says, “I think that people need to hear from us, more than they need to hear from the big whigs. War has a cost, and that cost is paid by soldiers.” From this powerful last line, one can assume that the author sides with the troops in this debate.
1) This article is about the flash flood in Istanbul, Turkey that killed at least 20 people. The heavy rain fall caused the flood to swoop highways and busy business districts. The flood destroyed homes and trapped drivers in their vehicles.
2) The most important conflict presented in the article is that people were trapped and dying by the flood.
3) The author assume that the flood is tragic.
4) The author’s seems to be distraught over the situation that is happening in Istanbul, Turkey also the metropolis was devolved with out infrastructure to handle heavy rainfall.
1) The article I read, titled Volunteers Find Muck and Meaning in Service (published on September 6th of this year) was about the branch of AmeriCorps titled the National Civilian Community Corps. The Corps lives and works in teams to preform community service activities. Anything from helping with hurricane relief to organizing teen centers - they are there. It also discussed the kinds of people working in the corps, their backgrounds, and how, for some, the NCCC changed lives. 2) In this article, I found the most important conflict to be that, while the NCCC does great work, they have awful living conditions. The author did not specifically say this, but did mention that a woman working on a teen center spent the night sleeping on the pool table, and that each person received less than five dollars a day for food. 3) The author assumes that the readers have an interest in the demographics and living situations of the NCCC population. 4) The author seems to feel as though the NCCC is not only doing good for the community it works for, but also for its commune-living participants. He seems sympathetic to their hardships, and also appears to admire their efforts and victories.
400 Years and 400 Names: Museum Tweaks City A-List
1. I read an article about the revised “New York 400”—a list of inspirational figures in New York’s society over the last 400 years. The updated version includes famous personal like Sean Combs and Jerry Seinfeld, as well as some original names such as Astor and Rockefeller. This celebrated and anticipated list immortalizes those that have in some how changed and affected New York society and culture, and although not definite, there are few that would argue with the famed names included. 2. The most important conflict in this article is about the names that weren’t named. There has been debate over the many ignored figures on this list, as many argue over who should and should not been honored. 3. The author assumes that all who are reading this article are well read and up to date on the personnel of current and historical New York high society. 4. The authors attitude is subtle, there at first seems to be no opinion behind this piece. It becomes clear however that the author did not wholly agree with whoever composed the list, and has some idea of who should be included on the next 400.
1) I read "4 militants held in fatal attack on Christians in Pakistani town." It was about four militants who are Muslims, killed about seven people and 100 houses are burned.
2) The most important conflict was that those militants are Muslim and killed Christians but they are arrested.
3) The author assumed that those militants or groups are planned about these attack.
4) The author thinks that Muslim's crime was planned and was cruel.
1) The article I read is called "After Hubble Repair, New Images From Space" by Dennis Overbye. This article talks about the new technology that has just been installed in the Hubble Telescope, as well as the new pictures it has just taken. Pictures of a bruise on Jupiter, a dying star, and a galaxy 10 billion light years away are just the first of many to come.
2) The biggest conflict in this article stems from the new changes made to the telescope. This is because with all of the new technology put into it scientists will have to come up with new, better ideas to expand upon it.
3) The author assumes that the reader has a pretty good idea what the Hubble Telescope is, what it does, and what its history is about.
4) The authors attitude is one of pride. He is showing his support for NASA by praising the telescope and the the astronauts that fixed it.
The piece I read was the obituary of Edward Moore Kennedy. It was primarily an illustration of his illustrious albeit tumultuous political career that detailed not only the roller coaster of a career that he endured but more importantly the spirit of hope, dedication and american patriotism that is easily and often admirable - and yet so rarely found.
The most important conflict seems to be how america (particularly the senate/government) will function without him. He is an individual who instrumental in creating crucial bills and passing large decisions that required bi-partisan "crossing the line" senators in order to have passed.
The author assumes that you understand to a degree the american governing system. He also assumes that Kennedy is being viewed in a positive light. From my own biased, un-researched individual view he is clearly a true patriot and great american however a debate does rage as to whether he truly represented the ideals of american beauty/life. This author, like me, assumes that the readers are positively assessing Kennedy's life.
The author thereby has a very reverent, awe-inspired, truthfully somewhat 'fluffed- up' view of Teddy.
Racing Chopin All the Way to the Wire MICHAEL KIMMELMAN
1)The author in this article criticizes Lang Lang, the 27 years old pianist, for his loose interpretation of Chopin Piano Concert in F minor. First, he compares Mr.Lang’s performance with the previous concert given by Pierre Boulez, by emphasizing Mr. Boulez’s seriousness in interpreting music and audiences’ ovations. Then he quotes one Washington Post columnist’s comment about a book, and explains how those critique can also be applied to Lang Lang’s performance. 2)Since the author himself is a critic, the conflict— even though it might be one sided conflict— rises between the author and Lang Lang, as their interpretation and taste of music are different. 3)The biggest assumption the author is making is that Lang Lang played Chopin Concerto awfully bad. Even though some people—though they won’t be many— might have liked Lang Lang’s music, the author is not afraid to claim that Mr.Lang’s play was “galling.” 4)Author’s attitude is apparent in this article. He openly criticize Lang Lang’s performance, as he thinks Mr.Lang’s music lacks deep interpretation and is swollen with showmanship.
1. I read the article "Attacks Muddle American Plans to Draw Down in Iraq" about the violence increasing in Iraq. This increase makes it difficult for the U.S. to do what they went there to do and still reduce their role in Iraqi affairs. The U.S. has been helping move equipment and support the Iraqui forces in the face of violence, it is difficult to do both at the same time.
2. The conflict is between the desire to diminish the role of the U.S. in Iraqi Affairs, but still aid the Iraqis in the face of all of this violence.
3. The author assumes that the reader knows about what is going on in Iraq.
4. The author seems to be worried about the situation.
I read the article called “Obama Vows to ‘Deliver on Health Care’”. You can probably infer what it is about from the title. Nevertheless, mainly the articles states Obama’s views on American Health Care and what needs to be done to fix it. The president states how America has been wasting its time with its system of Health Care and claims it is what got us into this mess. The most important conflict in the article would have to definitely be the struggle between Obama and America. It is said and it is the author’s point of view that Obama is doing well with this “Delivery to Health Care”, but it is clearly not happening easily. Although, I would say the author is definitely on Obama’s side in his views and agrees completely with his plans and therefore is doing everything he can to appeal to our emotions about what Obama’s doing. For example, he making everything that Obama sound kind, nice, correct, and right through his words.
"Study Spells Out Spread of Brain Illness in Animals." by Sandra Blackeslee
1. I have read an article called "Study Spells Out Spread of Brain Illness in Animals." This article is about the rapid spread of a fatal brain infection in deer and in other animals. Reaserchers explain unlike other animals, how did deer give off the infectious agent, a form of protein called a prison, from lymph tissue in their intestinal ligings uo to a year before they develop the disease. Through the experiment, Dr.Tamguney shows the result of before infection and afterward of diseases on deer.
2. Dr.Tamguney did experiment with using mice to understand how the disease develops on deer and also to understand symptoms after disease on deer. However, the experiment with using the mice can be bringing different symptoms on deer.
3. The author makes assumption that there will be no chance chronic wasting disease will be eradicated on deer.
4. The author seems to believe thre is no evidence to date that human who hunt, kill and eat deer have developed chronic wasting disease.
1. The article I read was called Birth Control and Family Planning and relates to the use of birth control pills and the procedures and precautions that should be taken when using them. The article states that it is best to use this form of birth control if you are trying to postpone a pregnancy as opposed to not wanting to get pregnant altogether. This article also talks about how the pills should not be used to prevent diseases such as STD. The article says that condoms are the best for that.
2. One of the biggest conflicts presented in the article is health issues. For instance they should not be given to women over 35 who smoke.
3. The author makes the assumption that birth control pills are not the best option.
4. The attitude that the author has toward this subject is that birth control pills are not the best way to stop a pregnancy.
The article I read was called '"Beatlemania": strikes with CD's, video game launch' and describes the release of the remastered Beatles album as well as the new video game," The Beatles: Rock Band", as a global event reaching America,Europe and Asia.
The major conflict expressed in this article is the fear that fans are only interested in the music, and the game is just a craze that will not suceed due to video game sales decreasing.
An assumption made by the author is that the reader knows who The Beatles are. He never gives any background information on the band other than the fact that they formed 50 years ago.He uses terminology that only Beatles fans would understand like "Beatlemania", and "The Fab Four".
The authors attitude seems to be that he is a fan of the Beatles, referring to them as " arguably the worls most successful pop band", and continues on to claim they "changed the face of popular music in the 60's"

ReplyDeleteI have read an article called "Mexican Police Secure Hijacked Plane". A man who was a pastor of a church warned that he had a bomb in a plane and wants to talk to Mexican president that Mexico is in danger. This man, José Mar Flores Pereira, 44, clamed that he saw a devil in Mexican flag that he has to save mexico and Mexico would have devastating earthquake that would harm many people. This person was not able to reach the cockpit and thus the plane landed safetly with armies waiting for it. He was later arrested and many passengers got out of the place without even knowing what happened.
2. A man with his weird belief was later arrested for trying to hyject plane. Thus all the passengers are safe.
3. Even though there were no other accomplice, there could be some..
3. Since some passengers did not know what had happened in the place, a man's attempt was easy.
